Storm Ciara leaves hundreds of Wales rugby fans stranded in Dublin as flights cancelled and plane forced to divert to Manchester

Storm Ciara has been wreaking havoc on Wales rugby fans' travel plans this weekend as gale-force winds and heavy rain caused chaos.

Hundreds of Welsh supporters who had been due to fly home on Sunday following the defeat to Ireland have been unable to return today due to the appalling weather conditions.

One flight from Dublin, which was due to land in Cardiff early this afternoon, circled the Welsh capital airport before being forced to divert to Manchester due to the conditions. That Jet2 journey, on a Boeing 737-8K5, took a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes for those on board.

The Wales team are due to fly on a chartered plane this afternoon.

Elsewhere, a Welsh rugby tour operator has seen two flights cancelled today. The Transavia flights were fully booked with 189 people on each of them.

The flights cancelled were the 12.45pm and 4.30pm flights from Dublin to Cardiff.

Robert Davies, owner of Porthcawl-based Robert Davies Sports Travel, arrived at the Irish airport at around 10am on Sunday morning for the scheduled 12.45pm flight.

He said the flight operators had been advised by Cardiff Airport that wind speeds could be around 80mph when the flights were due to land, leading to their postponements.

"Both of our flights today are affected", he said.

"Safety obviously is the most important thing.

"Both flights were full.

"Everybody's accepted it. It's out of everybody's control."

The firm and Transavia Airlines are together funding accommodation and food for everyone affected.

Mr Davies added: "It's the weather. Nobody can do anything about it.

"We haven't had any issues at all."

The customers are due to fly home on Monday, with the same flight times.

Dublin Airport had said earlier on Sunday: "A small number of flights have been cancelled to/from Dublin Airport today due to Storm Ciara.

"The weather conditions may also result in some flight delays. Please check latest flight information with your airline before coming to the airport today."

A statement from Cardiff Airport issued on Sunday said: "There is some disruption to flights today due to weather.

"Our advice to passengers due to travel is to check with their airline for the latest information on their flight."

Live flight information is also available on the  Cardiff Airport website.
