Storm Ciara in Edinburgh: 'The Nor Loch returns' as huge pool of water spotted in Princes Street Gardens

Storm Ciara has knocked Edinburgh back a few centuries, as a huge pool of water spotted in Princes Street Gardens reminds people of the Nor Loch.

The city was hit by flooding and travel disruption on Sunday, and the foul weather is due to continue for much of this week.

The Christmas market left Edinbrugh's central park looking like a mudflat at the beginning of January.

However the city council said the grass would be restored "as soon as possible," funded by contractor Underbelly.

Stephen Harte tweeted a picture of the eastern Gardens on Sunday, showing a massive puddle at the lower end of the slope.

He said: "Our hapless City Council appear on track for the restoration of the Nor Loch."

One person replied saying: "Perhaps a pond would be preferable to #EdXmas? At least when it freezes over people won't be charged an arm and a leg? Great photo of the awfulness that is #EPSG #eastprincesstreetgardens"

The Nor' Loch was a man-made body of water which sat to the north of the historic city of Edinburgh.

It was essentially an open sewer for the city and was infamously foul-smelling and dirty. It was used to drown witches during some of the most gruesome chapters of Edinburgh's history.

The Nor Loch was drained in the 1760s to become what we now know as Princes Street Gardens and the Waverley railway line.

The heavy rainfall from Storm Ciara blocked off the tram line on Sunday, with Seafield Road also hit by a flash flood.

Most of the flooding in the city appears to have cleared on Monday morning. However Edinburgh and the Lothians are braced for three days of snow and rain this week.
