Storm Ciara in Edinburgh: Pontoon platform breaks loose and sails down Water of Leith

A platform which was placed underneath an Edinburgh bridge during repair works has broken free amid Storm Ciara.

The pontoon under the Anderson Place bridge has sailed down the Water of Leith, with parts of it reaching as far as The Shore.

Amazed Leith residents shared pictures of the black platform as it made its way downstream on Sunday. The heavy rainfall caused the river to surge.

Most of it seems to have got stuck at the bend in the river near Great Junction Street, creating a miniature dam. But some of the black segments were spotted under the Sandport Place bridge.

Peter Anderson wrote in to Edinburgh Live saying: "The workman's pontoon under the bridge on Anderson Place over the Water of Leith has broken free it is now stuck on a bend a quarter mile down stream just before Great Junction Street bridge.

"It is causing a dam and potentially a flooding risk."

The bridge works began in December and were due to continue until March 20.

They were described as "maintenance and repairs" by Edinburgh City Council.

Snow has been forecast to hit Edinburgh on Monday, while other parts of the city are recovering from flash flooding.
