Storm Ciara: Huge sinkhole opens up in garden as heavy rains pummel Britain

A large sinkhole has appeared in a garden in Rochdale, following the heavy downpours caused by Storm Ciara over the weekend.

A video shows turf collapsing into the hole, which has quick-flowing water running through it.

Amanda Webster told LBC News over the weekend that she witnessed the sinkhole opening up in her garden in Rochdale, a town north of Manchester.

Not far from Rochester, the River Irwell burst its banks in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, causing severe flooding.

Storm Ciara continues to cause chaos in the UK, as more than 20,000 homes went without power overnight.

Heavy rain means there are currently 110 flood warnings in place across the UK, indicating that “immediate action” is required.

Some parts of the UK were buffeted with a-month-and-a-half’s rainfall in only 24 hours over the weekend, while winds reached more than 90 miles per hour on the Isle of Wight and the Welsh coast on Sunday.

Although the Met Office’s amber warning for wind ended on Sunday evening, a yellow wind warning is still in place for many parts of the UK on Monday.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill warned that the weather will remain “very unsettled” as Storm Ciara clears away.

Burkill said cold air hitting the UK would bring the risk of snow, adding: "There could be up to 20cm on Monday and Tuesday and with strong winds, blizzards aren't out of the question."

Transport delays and cancellations are expected to continue throughout Monday.
