Storm Ciara: How UK storm names are chosen by the Met Office and what is next

Storm Ciara is the first storm to hit Merseyside this year after an amber warning was issued by the Met Office.

The region has seen dangerous weather conditions throughout the day - with winds of up to 80mph.

Flights were cancelled, trees fell and trampolines were spotted around the city because of the torrential weather.

Despite Ciara being the first storm to hit us, it is the third storm to be named by the Met Office in the latest list.

Storm Atiyah was the first named storm to hit the country back in December, but it didn't have an impact on Merseyside.

That was followed by Storm Brendan which smashed parts on the United Kingdom over two days.

We escaped both of these storms, but we have certainly felt the wrath of Ciara.

Once Ciara has settled, there is a long list of storms waiting in the wind to hit the region - so brace yourselves for more torrential conditions.

When is a storm named?

Criteria for the Met Office naming storms is based on the National Service Weather Warnings service.

It is decided depending on the impact the weather may have and how likely it is to happen.

Storms names are only issued when it could reach an amber or red warning.

The Met Office lists storms alphabetically but skips Q, U, X, Y and Z to comply with international storm-naming conventions and to maintain consistency for official storm naming in the North Atlantic.

Suggesting a storm name

The Met Office site said they received thousands of suggestions for storm names after asking people to send their ideas.

A new list will eventually be put together and the Met Office says people are welcome to suggest names for future consideration.
