Storm Ciara has battered Manchester city centre

Storm Ciara has battered its way through Manchester city centre.

Photographs and video footage at both Castlefield and Salford Quays shows flooding onto the pathways.

There are currently two flood warnings in place covering the River Irwell at Salford close to the city centre.

Travellers faced disruption with delays on Metrolink services after a fallen tree blocked the track on the East Didsbury line, with another on the Rochdale via Oldham line.

Bus replacement services are still in operation.

While passengers could get into the centre from south Manchester with services running up to Victoria, commuters on the tram couldn't help but gasp as they travelled alongside the River Irwell from above passing through Castlefield.

Canal pathways were visibly flooded making it impossible for people to walk or cycle along the route into the city centre.

The River Irwell's banks were also burst at Salford Quays with photographs showing flooded pathways outside the Lowry Hotel.

Residents took to social media to share their concern.

One said: "#StormCiara is terrifying. This video doesn't do it justice. It's wild out there. If you can, please stay indoors" before saying she has "never seen" the paths disappear like this before.

The Met Office issued an amber weather warning for wind, along with a yellow rain warning across Greater Manchester on Sunday.

With gusts of up to 80mphs and torrential rain, the Environment Agency has put 125 flood warnings in place in the north west region, with 42 flood alerts.
