Storm Ciara: Astonishing pictures show flooding in Ramsbottom as the River Irwell burst its banks

These extraordinary images show water racing along the River Irwell through Ramsbottom in the midst of Storm Ciara.

Homes in parts of Bury, including Radcliffe and Redvales, were evacuated after the river burst its banks - though it is not yet known how many homes have been affected.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue have attended 17 incidents of flooding across the region since midnight.

They have also been called out to deal with five dangerous structures including felled trees, roof tiles and a garden wall.

According to the Environment Agency the Irwell is approached it highest record levels in parts of Ramsbottom. Levels peaked at 3.07m just before 1pm.

By 3pm they had dropped to around 1.95m.

Images shared with the M.E.N show the water at extremely high levels.

Twitter user at @daddyg67 said the pictures were taken at the bridge in Stubbins on the way into Ramsbottom.

“Same place where the Irwell flooded during the Boxing day floods of 2015,” he said.

People living and working close to the River Irwell have been warned to take precautions.

Another video shows a car parked close to the river almost completely under water as the water rages past.
