Storm Christoph: Water perilously close to homes in Rochdale as allotment floods

Residents living near a river at risk of bursting its banks in Rochdale said they are 'praying' the rainfall stops.

Photos from the Roch Wood Nature park show water levels are perilously close to homes as torrential rain continues to batter the region.

A flood warning has been issued for the River Roch, warning that 'flooding to property is expected'.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning.

It is in place until 6am tomorrow as Storm Christoph brings heavy downpours to Rochdale.

Allotments on Kellett Street have been completed submerged in water following heavy showers.

A path running next to the road has also flooded.

The allotments are used as a garden centre for people with learning difficulties.

One woman told the Manchester Evening News : "It's so sad, every year this happens and they'll have to rebuild them again."

Another woman expressed concern about the continuing rainfall.

"You get worried when you see it this close, we're praying it doesn't rain as much tomorrow," she said.

A statement on the Environment Agency website states that there is a possibility of flooding for the area from Roch Valley Way to Yorkshire St and Albert Royds Street.

River levels are likely to remain high until Friday.

The website states: "Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses, be aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the current situation.

"This message will be updated this afternoon, Wednesday 20th January, or as the situation changes."

Last night a major incident was declared by GMP due to concerns about the impact of the floods.

Earlier this afternoon, Assistant Chief Constable Nick Bailey said up to 3,000 properties were at risk of flooding in Trafford and south Manchester.
