Storm Christoph: The areas of Wales most at risk as dozens of flood alerts issued amid torrential rain

Torrential downpours will exacerbate flooding across Wales as Storm Cristoph continues to batter the country.

Several inches of rain caused rivers to swell and burst their banks throughout Wednesday with flood warnings and alerts issued by Natural Resources Wales.

Met Office chief meteorologist Neil Armstrong has warned Wales could see a month’s rainfall during the period of the weather warning with up to 200mm possible over higher ground.

"These amounts of rainfall present a real threat of flooding and people should keep a close eye on flood warnings from the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, and SEPA," he said.

With the ground already saturated in many places the remaining rainfall will continue cause flooding problems. The Met Office is warning of flooding to homes and businesses as well as damage to some buildings.

Fast-flowing or deep floodwater could also cause a "danger to life", a spokesman said.

While only essential travel is currently permitted in Wales those who have to go out should prepare for difficult driving conditions including road closures. You can get the latest updates on the road conditions and flooding in our live blog.

The severity of the rain will begin to dial back into the early hours of Thursday morning. From midnight most places will see the rain come to an end or reduce to less than 1mm per hour.

The yellow weather warning for rain will officially come to an end at 6am.

However blustery and wintry showers will continue in some parts of the country through the weekend.
