Storm Brendan weather warning for wind causes Punchestown races to be abandoned

The Storm Brendan weather warning for wind has led to Punchestown's card being abandoned on safety grounds.

The yellow alert from Met Éireann suggests gusts in the Kildare area could reach an average of 65km/h, up to 110km/h as the storm tracks to Ireland's northwest.

Areas including Dublin, Carlow, Wicklow and Roscommon are due to be affected.

Punchestown officials decided to make an early call on their fixture, which was set to start at 12.45pm.

Chief executive Conor O'Neill tweeted: "Following a course inspection this morning and having consulted with Met Éireann, the fixture has been cancelled.

"Due to the status orange weather warning that is currently in place for the Kildare area and with Met Éireann predicting that winds will be at their strongest during scheduled race times, the fixture is cancelled due to safety concerns."

Winds are not expected to be as strong at Lingfield and the meeting passed its early check.

Less rain fell than was forecast, in the region on 1mm and conditions remain testing.

Clerk of the course George Hill tweeted: "Racing goes ahead: precautionary inspection passed. Heavy (few wet areas – raceable) (GoingStick 4.3).

"1mm rain early this morning, now stopped. Forecast: chance of a few light showers around 12noon, wind picking up this afternoon, 20mph (gusts up to 35mph during racing)."

Following the abandonment of Punchestown, the first of Lingfield's six races will be delayed by five minutes to provide a better spacing to Southwell, the BHA announced.
