Storm Brendan: Met Eireann's Evelyn Cusack asks people to not share fake weather charts

Met Eireann's head of forecasting Evelyn Cusack has pleaded with the public not to share fake weather charts and warnings.

Speaking on Today with Sean O'Rourke on RTE Radio 1, she advised people seeking local weather information to check the Met Éireann website or app.

She said: "You can see on the radar there, that is the squall line, you can get your local area weather perfectly clear on the radar".

She added that people who download the app can get updated weather warnings as they happen.

Ms Cusack said:"Could I ask people to stop tweeting fake weather warnings and fake weather charts, there's some really crazy stuff out there and it's very irresponsible.

"There's a whole lot of fake weather charts out there with red warnings and everything on it.

"The Met Eireann warnings are out, we've spent the last two days here considering this very carefully.

"We've a full team of people here with the best high-resolution model and you know, it's very irreponsible."

She added: "Maybe some people think they're better at forecasting by looking out the window than Met Eireann. We run a 24/7 operation paid for by the citizens of Ireland, so I'm actually astounded."

Ms Cusack also revealed there would be a "second sting" for Donegal and the northwest later this afternoon with a possibility of thunderstorms in parts also.

"There's going to be a second sting, if you like, for Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo. There'll be orange warnings continuing right through the afternoon.

She also added that a band of thunderstorms could cause more power outages nationwide.

She said:"There is a band of thunderstorms moving eastwards so that may lead to more power outages.

"Everyone take care, take the advice of the local authorities, the gardai and the coastguard."
