Storm Brendan Ireland: Dublin City Council to erect flood defences and close car parks as yellow weather warning set for capital

A Dublin council is set to erect flood defences and close car parks ahead of the arrival of Storm Brendan.

Dublin City Council has said that on advice from Met Eireann, they will be erecting flood defences and closing car parks at Clontarf and Sandymount.

There is also a chance that flood gates along the River Dodder at Ballsbridge will be closed.

The car parks will be closed from 6am tomorrow - the weather warning will be in place from 8am.

In a statement, DCC said: "Dublin City Council has been monitoring the forthcoming unsettled weather following advice from Met Eireann and The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management.

"As a result, Dublin City Council will be erecting flood defences and closing the car parks at Clontarf and Sandymount from 6am Monday 13 January 2020. It is expected that these will reopen later on Monday afternoon.

"It may also be necessary to close some flood gates along the River Dodder in the Ballsbridge area. Dublin City Council will continue to monitor the weather over the next few days."

The weather warning from Met Eireann says: "As Storm Brendan tracks to the northwest of Ireland, southerly winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 70 km/h with gusts of 100 to 120 km/h, higher in exposed areas.

"There is a significant risk of coastal flooding due to the combination of high spring tides and storm surge."

While tomorrow's forecast says: "Mostly dry to begin on Monday with just patchy rain or drizzle. Southerly winds will gradually increase as the morning goes on, and it will become very windy towards midday with severe and possibly damaging gusts developing.

"Heavy rain will spread from the west in the late morning and through the afternoon. Winds will veer southwesterly as the heavy rain clears through and the winds will slowly moderate. Scattered showers will follow in from the west during the evening.

"There is a significant risk of coastal flooding due to a combination of strong winds, high spring tides and storm surge. Highs 8 or 9 degrees."
