Storm Benjamin LIVE: Flood alerts as UK lashed with 70mph winds and heavy rain

People across the UK are facing flooding and disruption as Storm Benjamin hits the country.

Heavy rain and gale force winds are expected to continue throughout the day with a number of yellow weather and flood warnings in place.

Rainfall could be as high as 50mm in some places while the wind is expected to reach speeds of 70mph.

Yellow weather warnings are also in place for London an the south of England along with the east Midlands, Yorkshire and parts of Wales.

The Met Office has warned that flooding, damage to buildings and travel disruption are likely throughout the day.

Met Office updates warnings as Storm Benjamin brings heavy rain and strong winds

The Met Office has updated its weather alerts, leaving just two warnings in place for Thursday as Storm Benjamin continues to move east.

A yellow warning for rain remains over Norfolk and Suffolk until 4pm, while a wind warning covers East Anglia, London and Kent, with strong gusts expected along the East Anglian coast into the night.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “A band of rain associated with Storm Benjamin will slowly move east during Thursday, bringing periods of heavy rain in places, particularly during the morning.”

Over 100,000 homes left without power in France as Storm Benjamin hits

More than 100,000 households in France were left without electricity this morning after Storm Benjamin swept across the country, national energy distributor Enedis said.

Authorities in Britain will be hoping to avoid a similar scenario, with the Met Office warning there is a “chance of power cuts and loss of other services” in areas affected by strong winds.

Disruption between Milton Keynes Central and Watford Junction expected until 2pm

A tree blocking the railway at Tring means that the line between Milton Keynes Central and Watford Junction is blocked.

Trains running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes.

The disruption is expected until 2pm.

Speeds above 58 mph can cause significant property damage.

Skegness poppy display in tatters

Storm Benjamin has ripped apart an 80,000 poppy display in Skegness, Lincolnshire World reports.

Residents have been cautioned to take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. They have also been advised to avoid low lying coastal roads, “as sea spray and waves could be dangerous”.

"Greater than usual uncertainty"

Chief meteorologist Rebekah Hicks has warned that the public should stay up to date with weather warnings as the forecast is subject to change.

She said: "It is worth noting that there is a greater than usual uncertainty surrounding the track and intensity of this low-pressure system.

"The public should stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation evolves, with adjustments to the forecasts likely at short notice."
