Storm Bella to batter North East with strong winds and heavy rain on Boxing Day

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the North East on Boxing Day.

It's been predicted that heavy rain combined with strong winds may lead to some disruption and flooding in the region.

The Met Office predicts Storm Bella could even cause conditions that may pose a 'risk to life' in the south of England and parts of Wales.

Closer to home, the region was hit with snow early this morning.

A statement from the Met Office says a spell of heavy rain will accompany strong southwesterly winds later on Boxing Day and early Sunday.

The storm warning is in place between 6pm on Saturday December 26 and 9am on Sunday December 27.

Some parts of northern and eastern England and the Midlands, and much of Scotland can expect icy conditions on Christmas morning as the storm brews, the Mirror reports.

The wild conditions are set to bring disruption to travel and utilities over parts of south and southeast England and south Wales during the festive period.

Storm Bella is likely to bring disruption to travel and utilities.

It says 'very strong' southwesterly winds are expected for parts of south and southeast England and south Wales on Sunday morning.

Inland gusts of 50-60 mph are likely with a few spots likely to see 60-70 mph for a time.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wardle, told the Mirror: “Conditions will turn very unsettled after Christmas day, with a large area of low pressure sweeping across the UK from Boxing Day.

"Very strong winds will impact much of England and Wales, with particularly strong gusts on south west facing coasts.

“Heavy rain will also move in from the north, with heavy downpours through the afternoon in Scotland and Northern Ireland moving south across England and Wales overnight.

"This will be a notable change from the calmer conditions over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so take extra care and stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
