Storm Barra: Met Eireann extend orange warning to Dublin as schools told to shut due to weather

Met Eireann have extended their Status Orange weather warning to Dublin, as Storm Barra whips into a second day.

Tuesday saw widespread damage to trees, power lines and trampolines as huge winds and rainstorms arrived on the island.

And Wednesday is not set to get any better, with a number of red warnings and a fair few orange ones too.

Clare remains under a red wind warning until 7am on Wednesday, and until Tuesday evening, a total of nine counties faced an orange warning.

But shortly after 9pm, Dublin became the tenth.

The warning from Met Eireann reads: "Storm Barra will bring widespread mean speeds of 60 to 80 km/h and gusts greater than 110 km/h. Heavy rain will also bring risks of surface flooding and, due to a combination of high waves, storm surge and high tide, coastal flooding is expected. Disruption to power and travel are likely."

The warning runs from 1am to 7am on Wednesday morning.

Schools which are currently or scheduled to be under red or orange weather warnings due to Storm Barra are to remain shut for a second day.

This includes schools in counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Mayo and Wexford - and now Dublin.

The Department of Education is advising that all schools that are currently or forecast to be in a Red or Orange alert area should remain closed tomorrow, 8th December.

This will allow for assessment of the impact of Storm Barra to take place.

Schools who are no longer in a Red or Orange Alert area can reopen provided, if there are concerns, school managers have had an opportunity to check for fallen wires and other serious damage in the vicinity of school buildings.
