Storm Barra in Newcastle: When will it hit, how windy will it be and how rainy?

While Storm Barra is set to bring 50mph winds to coastal areas in the North East, it will be slightly calmer further inland in Newcastle.

But that doesn't mean it's not going to be wet and windy in the city from Tuesday afternoon and into the early morning on Wednesday.

Wind gust speeds are set to peak at 45mph in Newcastle, with the strongest winds hitting from between midday and 5pm.

Heavy rain is forecast from around lunchtime until the early evening.

Laying snow is unlikely, with temperatures only dropping as low as 3C - three degrees above freezing point. A snow warning covering western parts of the North East does not include Newcastle.

What will Storm Barra be like in Newcastle?

A Met Office forecast issued on Tuesday suggests Newcastle will not get wind speeds as fast as towns and cities on the coast such as Blyth, Seaham and Sunderland, where gusts of over 50mph are forecast.

But gusts of up to 45mph are set to hit Newcastle, with the strongest winds in the mid afternoon, from 2pm to 4pm.

Heavy rain is forecast between 1pm and 5pm. The rain should subside in the early evening, but it will return on Wednesday morning, peaking with heavy rain at 6am but clearing at around 8am.

It will be around 3C in the afternoon, rising to 5C in the evening and dropping back to 4C in the late night.

When will Storm Barra hit Newcastle?

Strong gusts of wind are forecast to start from 12 noon, with speeds of up to 36mph. Wind speeds are forecast to increase, rising to 45mph gusts at 3pm. Expect gusts of up to 40 mph until around 5pm, dropping to 30mph at 6pm.

Wind speeds will increase slightly in the evening, rising to 37mph around midnight. The wind speeds then drop as Wednesday morning progresses, according to the Met Office forecast.

Heavy rain is forecast top start around 1pm, lasting until between 5pm and 6pm. Light rain is forecast from midnight, and heavy rain at 6am on Wednesday morning, but that should clear by around 8am.

As yet, there is no storm, wind, or rail warning in place for Wednesday.
