Storm Atiyah: Gusts of up to 70mph to blast parts of UK as Met Office issues severe wind warning

Storm Atiyah is set to blast parts of the UK with powerful gusts of up to 70-80mph this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a severe 'danger to life' warning as the volatile weather system becomes the first storm  of the 2019/20 season to be named.

Met Eireann, in partnership with the Met Office, made the announcement on Friday afternoon as damaging winds are forecast to thrash coastal areas.

Western parts of England and Wales are expected to face the worst of the weather, with gusty winds likely to cause widespread disruption and travel delay for about 18 hours from Sunday at 3pm.

The yellow weather warning covers much of the south-west and extends across much of the western half of Wales up to Blackpool.

Further inland, winds of 50-60mph are expected but forecasters warn that these could reach 70mph.

In Ireland, winds caused by Atiyah could are likely to hit 80mph.

Why are storms named and which ones have been chosen for 2019/2020?

It comes after weather experts revealed an unpleasant concoction of heavy rain, strong winds and snow could batter Britain as the nation prepares to vote in the General Election next Thursday.

But when Atiyah strikes, Brits are being warned of possible delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport including bus and train services.

As well as some short term loss of power, large waves and some damage to temporary structures, according to the Met Office.

In the run-up to the weekend, Friday afternoon is set to remain largely mild for most of England and Wales.

Staying colder across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Saturday should be cloudy but mild across the southern half of Britain and staying cold and wet further north before Storm Atiyah starts to make its way towards the UK on Sunday.
