Storm Arwen tears through Lanark United football ground leaving club 'devastated'

A football ground has been ripped apart in the winds brought by Storm Arwen.

Lanark United have been left 'devastated' after the extreme weather tore through Moor Park, causing significant damage to the stands.

The club earlier shared photos of the scene on Twitter, which show corrugated roofing scattered across the pitch, collapsed walls and strewn debris after the storm took hold overnight.

The West of Scotland Football League side were due to host Ardrossan Winton Rovers at 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon, but understandably the match had to be cancelled.

Storm Arwen has wreaked havoc across much of the country. The Met Office earlier issued a severe warning for most of the east coast, with reports of wind speeds of 80mph and snow in certain areas.

Glasgow and the west appear to have survived relatively unscathed, however train services running between Glasgow and Edinburgh are only now returning to some degree of normality having been subject to 'major disruption' on Saturday morning.

Lanark United supporters and volunteers have spent much of the day at Moor Park in a bid to clear the debris and repair any damage where possible.

A club spokesperson said to Glasgow Live: "We've had lots of helpers busily cleaning up. Great to see this club is so loved by the locals."

Meanwhile, a fundraiser has already been launched to help The Yowes rebuild the ground, with almost £1,000 being donated already.

Rival teams have also shown their support over social media.
