Storm Arwen rail chaos captured by helicopter team as fallen trees block Scots train tracks

Storm debris littered across Scotland’s railway network has resulted in mass disruption for train travellers.

A number of lines remain blocked by fallen trees which were uprooted by winds of up to 100mph during Storm Arwen.

A track safety inspection remains underway by Network Rail Scotland who are using a specialist helicopter to scour for blockages.

An image released by the team shows a massive tree blocking both lines of the track at Errol, near Dundee, after they were blown over on Friday night.

Further damage has been discovered near Broughty Ferry where another large tree has landed on the railway.

Network Rail, who own and manage most of the railway network in the UK, have said their teams are working as hard as possible to fix any damage.

They tweeted: “We’ve just held a conference call with our teams across Scotland’s Railway around the ongoing disruption caused by the extreme winds overnight.

“The situation is one of the most challenging in recent memory.

“We’re working methodically to inspect all of our routes. Safety is our number one priority and we will not send trains out unless it’s safe to do so.

“Our teams have worked through the night in challenging conditions to keep passenger and freight trains moving where we can.

“Scotland’s Railway helicopter is in the air to help us inspect these routes quickly and they’re feeding back information to our Control team on where we need to send engineers.

“It’s currently above Springburn in Glasgow, then it’ll work its way northwards.

“The East Coast and West Coast Mainlines are disrupted, with trees on the overhead lines causing damage.

“If you’re due to travel cross-border, please check with @LNER, @AvantiWestCoast, @TPExpressTrains, @CrossCountryUK, @LUMOtravel and @CalSleper before you leave.

“If you’re travelling within Scotland on @ScotRail, do check in with them for the latest live travel information, disruption is affecting many routes, particularly in the North and the East, though it’s had an impact on the West too.”
