Storm Arwen: Full list of places set to be hit as rare RED weather warning issued

The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning ahead of Storm Arwen coming to the UK - here is a full list of places set to get battered.

People in the affected areas have been warned to avoid travelling if they can. The forecaster has also expanded the area under the amber 'danger to life' warning to include more of north England.

From midnight until 6pm tomorrow all of Great Britain is at risk of strong winds of up to 75mph.

The red weather warning is for coastal parts of Scotland, as well as some of the north east of England.

Regions affected - red warning

The Met Office map says much of the east coast of Scotland and the north east of England need to be on high alert.

The warnings are in place from Friday 3pm until 2am on Saturday.

The red warning covers from the north east of Scotland, reaching Aberdeen, Montrose and Stonehaven.

England doesn't escape - with Tyneside also covered. Newcastle, Sunderland, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough are included.

All of Scotland and Northern Ireland have been put on alert for snow and wind as a danger to life warning was issued.

Much of the north west of England has also been given yellow status with gusts of 55 to 65mph forecast.

Parts of Wales, especially coastal areas, are included too.

Areas of Cornwall and Devon are also on the yellow list which runs from 5pm on Friday until 10am on Saturday.

The Met Office say there will be probable damage to trees, temporary structures and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.

Longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected.

Arwen is the first of the Met Office's latest list of named storms for this winter.

The grim forecast comes as Brits should expect power cuts and problems with other services, such as mobile phone coverage, we're told.

There is an amber warning set for those in the north and west of the country.

The Met Office's Tom Morgan told the Mirror some snow lovers could be left disappointed and says precautions must be taken to battle the storm.

"Not everyone will see snow, over the coming days It will be really cold petty much everywhere, especially after dark.

"But there is a concern and we have issued a weather warning for coastal areas with very strong winds predicted.

"People may want to consider their travel plans and ensure their garden furniture is tired down, because winds could reach 80MPH."
