Storm Arwen: Edinburgh police shut down major road after metal panel blown off roof

A major Edinburgh road has been locked down over safety fears after a large piece of metal panelling blew off a rooftop in high winds.

Police have cordoned off Home Street in the Tollcross area of the Capital in response to the incident as a result of Storm Arwen.

Bus services have been diverted away from the area until surrounding buildings near the King's Theatre can be made secure.

Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the City of Edinburgh Council buildings team have been made aware of the issue and are now investigating.

Transport operator Lothian has warned customers travel may be delayed and services diverted while the issue is dealt with.

The 10,11,15,16,23,27 and 36 are among those to be affected.

A statement read: "Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Home Street, Gilmour Place, Granville Terrace, Polwarth Terrace and are instead diverted via Melville Drive, Marchmont Road, Strathearn road, Church Hill, Holy Corner and Colinton Road in both directions until further notice."

A Police Scotland spokesman added: "We were made aware of a metal panel which had come loose on a building at Home Street in Edinburgh shortly after 12pm on Saturday, 27 November.

"The road has been closed as a precaution. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Edinburgh City Council has been made aware to assess the building."
