Storm Alex to batter UK as Met Office issues weather warning for Greater Manchester with 'risk of flooding'

Weather forecasters have warned Greater Manchester faces torrential downpours and the risk of flooding this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain for the region on Saturday and Sunday.

And tomorrow much of southern England will be battered by torrential rain and high winds as Storm Alex, a weather system named by Météo-France earlier this week, reaches the UK.

The warning, which covers much of the UK, begins at 3am on Saturday and continues through to 6pm the following day.

Met Office spokeswoman Bonnie Diamond said: "There's quite a wet weekend ahead for much of the UK including Greater Manchester.

"Storm Alex will affect mainly southern parts of the UK on Friday, but the northern tip of the storm will clip the Greater Manchester area.

"That system will then clear the UK, but it will be followed early on Saturday by another quite heavy band of rain coming from the east and stretching from Scotland right down to the south of England.

"It's persistent and slow moving and we can expect quite a miserable day on Saturday.

"50mm of rain is forecast within the warning period meaning there's a risk of flooding and difficult driving conditions on Saturday.

"There is a chance on higher ground in parts of Wales and the South West that could reach 100mm, and while that's not as likely in Greater Manchester, I do not think you can exclude the region from that.

"Sunday won't be as wet, but there is still some showery rain around."

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Nick Silkstone said: "Saturday will be a very wet day as heavy bands of rain push north and west across the country, followed by showery rain on Sunday.

"It’ll be cold and windy too with a risk of coastal gales in some areas.

"The Met Office has issued a rain warning covering large parts of the country over the weekend and we’re urging people to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and warnings during this spell of disruptive weather."
