Storm Alex: Rescue workers in boats free trapped motorist from floodwaters in Kirkliston

Emergency response crews have been hard at work in the village of Kirkliston just outside Edinburgh this afternoon as floodwaters inundated roads trapping people in cars.

Pictures show firefighters and paramedics responding with three water rescue boats on the scene at one point this afternoon.

Resident Scott Biddle has lived in Kirkliston for 15 years, he said he had never seen anything like the levels of flooding there today.

“Flood was the worst I’ve seen there. It floods a lot, but that was the worst,” he told Edinburgh Live.

He described how the emergency services had been called out to help residents trapped by the floodwaters, saying: “Water rescue had two boats and a third from the incident response team/ambulance."

“At that point there was an elderly man trapped in his BMW but the fire rescue managed to bring him to safety at the grass embankment, poor guy walked with a stick,” he added.

The rescue comes after Storm Alex drenched eastern Scotland with heavy rains yesterday, casing the Scottish Environment Protection Agency to issue multiple flood warnings.

Dramatic pictures taken by Scott show the extent of the flooding, with multiple vehicles caught up in the incident.

“There was a taxi a Tesco van, Jeep all stuck maybe a few others too,” Scott added.

The news comes as road and train travel remains disrupted in some areas following hours of heavy rain yesterday and last night.

A SEPA flood alert remains in place for Edinburgh and the Lothians.
