Storm Aiden turns local Irish road into dead end with damaging winds

The power of Storm Aiden has knocked trees and led to debris all over Ireland this morning.

People all over the country are waking up - albeit some probably didn't even sleep - to gale force winds blasting their windows.

12 counties are under status orange warning this morning with the entire country under a yellow wind warning until this evening.

One road in Wicklow felt the full force of the winds and was completely impassable for a time this morning.

Multiple branches and trees flew down onto the road with nobody passing at the time and being hit luckily. The road has since reopened, but Gardai warned earlier: “Please be careful travelling this morning, particularly on minor roads after strong winds overnight.

The weather is expected to improve as the day goes on but there are a few more hours of damaging weather to come.

A Met Eireann forecaster said this morning: "Orange & Yellow Weather Warnings in effect. Extremely windy or stormy for a time today as Storm Aiden tracks to the northwest of the country.

"Very strong to gale force southerly winds will veer westerly this morning with some further severe and damaging gusts, especially in Atlantic coastal counties. Very high seas will lead to a risk of some coastal flooding too.

"Whilst heavy overnight rain will clear into the Irish Sea this morning, sunshine and scattered heavy squally showers will follow, with the risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms, heaviest across the north and northwest.

"Becoming mostly dry later this afternoon with winds moderating then too, except for northern areas. After a mild start, highest afternoon temperatures will range a fresher 8 to 12 degrees Celsius."
