Stop the tall tales about election dates

There's no way round it and there's no time for subtlety: The past four years have been a sham, a false dream stage-managed by false prophets.

The clock keeps ticking, and the only way the junta can redeem some of its dignity is to announce the election date -- no, not the vague, slippery, disingenuous "next February", but an exact date that we can mark on the Gregorian calendar with a blood-red pen. And they must do it now. Any procrastination, any shifty delay, any lame excuse, will only exhaust the little integrity they have left and the support they once enjoyed. Any deferral will condemn them deeper into the black pages of history.

Since another "hurdle" has been cleared, the list of excuses for yet another postponement has dwindled. On Wednesday the Constitutional Court ruled unanimously that the organic bill passed by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) regarding the selection of senators did not contravene the 2017 Constitution. It was feared that this legal glitch -- real or manufactured -- would supply another basis for yet another postponement.
