Stop sticks used to halt stolen BMW; two in custody

Two men were being held in custody at the ACT Watch House on Wednesday morning after police used stop sticks to blow the tyres and halt the dangerous driving of a black BMW bearing diplomatic plates.

Early on Wednesday, drivers reported the black BMW SUV driving erratically and dangerously through Oaks Estate and parts of east Queanbeyan, with a police traffic motorcycle and a Subaru patrol car in pursuit.

The vehicle then headed for Canberra's southern suburbs.

The BMW was reported to be swerving all over the road and other vehicles had to pull over to avoid a collision.

The vehicle was finally halted by police in Kambah about 8.30am, when two men were arrested.

Police said the the BMW had been stolen from a residence in Holder.

Car thefts have been on the rise in Canberra in recent months. The final quarter of 2020 produced the biggest spike in ACT stolen cars in three years.

Stolen vehicles used to commit other offences often end up burnt out in an effort to eliminate any incriminating evidence left behind.

The Emergency Services Agency attended 38 car fires in December, the highest monthly total in more than two years.
