"Stop enforcing nonsense... what's the issue?": Fury over school's 'sexist' uniform policy

A school in Ashton-under-Lyne has drawn criticism for its uniform policy following a poll put out to our readers, with many people already expressing their disagreement.

The mum of a schoolgirl starting at St Damian's RC Science College expressed her outrage over the school's uniform policy, which sees girls banned from wearing trousers.

We also asked our readers for their thoughts on the issue, and more than 100 people voted in response with 85 percent of them calling for the school to allow girls to wear trousers.

The pupil's mum raised concerns over the policy, saying: ""Girls are at a disadvantage dealing with freezing weather and even upskirting. I can't believe such sexist attitudes are still prevalent in high schools."

Francesca Cambridge Mallen MA (PHDc), at Uniform Reform, also called out the policy, saying: "Schools also have a public duty to promote the 2010 Equality Act, and really need to consider how they can legally defend forbidding girls from wearing trousers when it clearly contravenes conventional dress standards."

Readers also shared their frustrations in the comments section, with one person saying: "I am all for school rules and discipline and I am not one for contesting rules however, there must be a reason attached, a genuine reason for said rule. Here I can see none.

"There is not a single reason I can see as to why females must wear a skirt. So long as they are wearing uniform, what is the issue with females wearing trousers?"

Another added: "Perhaps they should concentrate on teaching instead of enforcing nonsense."

One reader also shared their thoughts on school uniform in general, saying: "Get rid of school uniforms, mine made me absolutely miserable in summer and having to play at friend's houses after school, climbing trees in a uniform and so on. So ridiculous.

"The happiest children in the world are in countries with no uniforms like Scandinavia, Germany, Canada, and Holland."

You can also vote in our poll on the matter, or let us know your thoughts in our comments section.
