Stop Brexit rally hears speeches against Boris Johnson on steps of Leeds Art Gallery

An anti-Brexit rally in Leeds city centre heard speeches from MPs, MEPs and union members condemning the actions of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The Defend Democracy event took place on the steps of Leeds Art Gallery, on The Headrow, from 3pm and attracted a crowd of around 100 supporters.

There was a wide range of speakers, many of whom had already spoken at the Great Northern Stop Brexit Conference taking place in the city today.

All of them argued against a No-Deal Brexit and slammed Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plan to suspend Parliament for five weeks.

Leeds North West MP Alex Sobel (Labour) was one of those who spoke at the rally.

Afterwards he said: “It was a great pleasure to see so many people out in Leeds today, protesting the disgraceful actions of Boris Johnson.

"I believe that in these uncertain times, the people must have their voices heard. Whilst this has been made impossible through the Parliamentary process, the people were heard loud and clear in Leeds this afternoon."

Joining the Labour MP on stage were Liberal Democrat MEP, Shaffaq Mohammed, and the former leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett.

Mt Sobel added: "It was great to have support from so many other political parties.

"Together, we can overturn this attack on our democratic values and institutions.”

It was a busy day for protests and rallies in Leeds city centre.

Earlier there had been a march in support of the imprisoned Tommy Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) and members of that group had clashed with anti-racism protesters on Boar Lane.

In front of Leeds Art Gallery a small number of Robinson supporters challenged the Defend Democracy rally.

One man, draped in a Union Jack flag, was escorted away from the rally by police but for the most part the atmosphere remained civil.
