Stonewall Jackson dead: Country singer dies aged 89 after dementia battle

Stonewall Jackson has died at the age of 89.

The Grand Ole Opry star passed away on Saturday after a 'long battle' with vascular dementia.

The Opry, the longest-running radio show in history, announced Jackson's death in a press release.

Following his death fans have been taking to social media to mourn the musician.

One penned: "Shout Out to Stonewall Jackson. He left a influence on the country music industry. Inducted. 89 RIP."

A second echoed: "RIP to the great Stonewall Jackson "I've got her sweet love on my mind - and that's why I'm walkin'" Underrated artist with such a distinctive sound."

More joined in: "Another legend is gone. RIP Stonewall. Prayers for the Jackson family" and "I can't believe Stonewall's gone. He was a briliant songwriter and singer. RIP, mr. Jackson. 1932-2021."

The guitarist performed on the Opry from 1956 and was still appearing on the show in 2010.

Jackson released a series of hits throughout his career including Waterloo, and I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water.

The star had an impressive catalogue of music and landed 44 singles on the Billboard country chart.

In 2008, at age 75, he settled a federal age discrimination lawsuit against the Opry.

Jackson claimed Opry officials cut back his appearances starting in 1998 which led to him seeking and $10 million in compensatory damages and $10 million in punitive damages.

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Jackson got his big break from country legend Ernest Tubb after he bought him his first stage clothes and hired him as his opening act.

He was presented with the Ernest Tubb Memorial Award in 1997 for his contributions to country music, according to the Grand Ole Opry website.

Jackson is survived by his son, Stonewall Jackson Jr, whom he shared with his late wife Juanita, who died in 2019.
