Stonehenge marks public centenary with life-sized inflatable version by artist Jeremy Deller

This weekend marks 100 years since Stonehenge was gifted to the public, and Jeremy Deller is bringing the party with his bouncy castle version of the monument.

The Turner Prize winning artist is bringing his 2012 work Sacrilege – which consists of an life-sized inflatable Stonehenge – to the World Heritage site for the first time.

Deller, whose work frequently comments upon English cultural traditions, is curating this weekend’s celebrations at the site. They will mark a century since Stonehenge was gifted to the nation by local couple Cecil and Mary Chubb.

Sacrilege will be erected outside the visitors centre at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, just metres away from the 5,000 year old monument.

The work has previously travelled the world, delighting visitors with its dual function as a massive bouncy castle.

Deller has also collaborated with composer Matt Rogers to create a new piece of music for the site, which will be performed by the London Sinfonietta across the weekend. Deller will also host an afternoon tea party on Friday, followed by a talk on archaeology and art.

Sacrilege will be at Stonehenge Visitor Centre from October 26-28 2018. For more information, visit english-heritage.org.uk
