Stonehaven rail disaster remembered with minute’s silence for tragic crash victims

A minute's silence will be held for the tragic victims of the Stonehaven rail disaster exactly one year on from the crash.

Scotland's railways will fall silent and trains will stop running for one minute on Thursday, August 12, to remember those who died in the derailment.

The minute's silence will take place at 9:43am - which is the time the crash was first reported.

The ScotRail Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street service was travelling near Stonehaven when it hit a landslide and came off the tracks.

The carriages then ploughed into a bridge before the leading power car fell down a wooded embankment and caught fire.

Driver Brett McCullough, 45, conductor Donald Dinnie, 58, and passenger Chris Stuchbury, 62, all tragically died while another six people were taken to hospital with various injuries.

The alarm was raised by an off-duty conductor Nicola Whyte, who was travelling as a passenger, after she walked to reach a signal box despite being injured herself.

Alex Hynes, Scotland’s Railway Managing Director, said: “Everyone at Scotland’s Railway will always be broken-hearted about the terrible accident at Stonehaven.

“Today, exactly a year on, we pay tribute to Brett, Donald and Christopher, who lost their lives, and also, of course, we remember those who were injured.

“We come together as Scotland’s Railway family and we send our love and support to everyone, particularly the loved ones of the deceased, who have been affected by the tragedy. We will never forget.”
