Stonehaven derailment one minute silence: Edinburgh train stations to pay respect to the victims

Edinburgh train stations will hold a one-minute silence in memory of the three men who lost their lives last week in a horror rail accident.

Following a storm the night before, the 6.38 am Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street ScotRail service crashed after heavy rain caused a landslip on the track.

At around 9.43 am on Wednesday 12, emergency services rushed to the scene where six people were taken to hospital, and three sadly lost their lives.

Today a one-minute silence will take place across Edinburgh and Scots railway stations to honour the lives of driver Brett McCullough, 45, conductor Donald Dinnie,58, and Christopher Stuchbury, 62, who was a passenger on the train.

In a statement, Frank Ross the Lord Provost of Edinburgh said: "Tomorrow morning, Edinburgh's train stations will join countless others across Scotland to fall silent at 09:43 am, precisely a week after the Stonehaven derailment.

"Wherever you are in the City, please pause if you can + remember the three men who sadly lost their lives."

Alex Hynes, Scotland’s Railway Managing Director, said: “Scotland’s Railway, and the railway across much of Britain, will fall silent on Wednesday to mark the passing of Brett, Donald, and Christopher.

“Our hearts remain broken and will do for a long time. We hope that by coming together as a railway family, along with the local community and people across the country, we can support one another through this horrendous time.

“The strength of support and offers of help from railway colleagues across the rest of Britain has been a real source of comfort.”

Edinburgh Trams have also confirmed that they will be supporting ScotRail in taking the one-minute silence today.

They said: "EdinburghTrams will be supporting our colleagues at ScotRail by joining their one minute silence at 09:43 today, to remember the three lives sadly lost at Stonehaven."
