Stolen Peugeot driven away at 90mph in Bristol 30mph zone

A Hartcliffe teenager who drove a car stolen in a burglary has been spared immediate custody.

Daniel Coyle denied entering a home in Lampton Road, Long Ashton.

But police spotted him in a Peugeot stolen from the driveway and he led them on a six mile pursuit in which he reached speeds of up to 90mph in 30mph zones.

Coyle, 18, of Randolph Close, pleaded guilty to burglary and aggravated vehicle taking in January. Judge Michael Longman handed him a 19-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He told Coyle: "Quite apart from anybody else's life you put your own life at risk."

Coyle was told to undergo up to so days' rehabilitation and carry out 80 hours' unpaid work. He was ordered to abide by a six-month curfew in which he must stay at home, on an electronic tag, from 8pm to 6am.

He was also banned from driving for 18 months and told to take an extended driving test.

Ian Fenny, prosecuting via video link, said raiders entered the Long Ashton home, stole car keys and then cars from the driveway.

Coyle was spotted in a stolen Peugeot on the A38 Bridgwater Road, Bedminster, the court heard.

Mr Fenny said that, for some six minutes, Coyle drove at up to 90mph through residential zones, jumped red traffic lights and sped through junctions.

He told the court: "It was late at night, no other road users were put at risk but the potential for risk is obvious.

"The car came to a halt, minor damage was caused and the defendant was arrested."

The court heard Coyle had a previous conviction for aggravated vehicle taking.

Susan Cavender, defending, said her client was an "extremely young" 18-year-old who had gone off the rails after a relationship split.

She said: "He comes across as a young person who needs a lot of assistance and guidance.

"I hope he is most unlikely to darken these doors again."
