Stolen narrowboat boarded after agonisingly slow 4mph police chase that lasted 13 miles

A stolen narrowboat was eventually boarded by police after possibly the slowest chase ever encountered.

Officers pursued the vessel for 13 miles, travelling at around 4mph on the Grand Union Canal in Leicestershire.

Officers from Leicestershire's Harborough Police joined police from Northamptonshire on the low-speed chase, Leicestershire Live reports.

Once officers from both forces had had a chance to catch their breath, they shared photographs of themselves aboard the captured vessel - which is believed to be called 'Elusive'.

In a tweet from the Harborough Police account, an officer said: "In a career first and following a 13 mile ‘follow’, we completed a hard stop on a stolen canal boat!

Officers posed for pictures when they eventually boarded the boat (Polcie handout)

"The boarding party was led by Sergeant Archer and saw a multi force approach with Northamptonshire Police."

He added: "The suspect party surrendered on sight. One male was arrested. Plus a boat ride for the teams."

People following the Harborough Police Twitter account were full of praise for the officers following their ordeal, including the boat's owner.

Sarah from Hinckley Police said: "That boat definitely floated for you - so sorry that was an oarfully bad joke!"

Colin and Rachel added: "Well done for saving someone’s pride and joy and home. Probably the slowest pursuit in history!"

To which Annie Tomlinson replied: "I agree. That boat is our pride and joy."

Peter Bee chipped in with: " Weather is good. Speed is..... slow. Road conditions are......... slightly damp."

Paul Baker added: "I think I would have been tempted to make them walk the plank."

The gaffer himself, Leicestershire Police Chief Constable Simon Cole, also got involved.

"Some relief for the owners too," he said, adding: "Glad to hear that we have been able to help."
