Around £10,000 worth of Quality Street chocolate was found in the back of a stolen lorry which was driven the wrong way down the M62 .
Police tweeted photos of piles of boxes of the sweets in the back of the stolen Rhys Davies HGV in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Officers were called to reports of a lorry being driven the wrong way westbound at junction 20 for Rochdale just after midnight.
When police arrived at the scene they found the driver had run away.
Pictures taken on the Highways England traffic cameras showed the abandoned vehicle was left facing the wrong way across a live lane of traffic.
PC Paul Ashworth, from the GMP Traffic team, said the stolen vehicle was on false plates.
He said: "The HGV was a cloned tractor unit with a stolen trailer. It had £10,000 worth of stolen Quality Street chocolate inside.
"It was tracked by Highways cameras. It came to a stop and the driver jumped out and ran off.
"Patrols recovered the vehicle."
No arrests have been made, PC Ashworth confirmed.
