A former bank employee has been arrested and charged with buying stolen credit card data from foreign websites and using it to purchase goods online worth about 8 million baht.

Sakon Witchayangkul, 36, of Bangkok, was apprehended in front of Silk Place condominium on Phahon Yothin Road in Bang Khen district on Thursday afternoon, Pol Maj Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, chief of the Crime Suppression Division, said at a media briefing on Friday.

The suspect was wanted on charges of using other people's electronic cards to pay bills or debts in lieu of cash payment, causing damage to the card holders. The offences carry a jail term of up to five years and/or a fine up to 100,000 baht.

Seized from his condominium room were five computers, 36 SIM cards of various mobile phone operators, four mobile phones, one iPad and 10 grammes of crystal methamphetamine.  He faces an additional charge of having an illicit drug in his possession.

Mr Sakon, who previously worked at several banks, allegedly purchased other people's credit card data on foreign websites. The goods he bought online included mobile phones, gold necklaces and a notebook computer. More than 100 credit card holders were affected.
