Stolen car sparks midnight police chase as helicopter scrambled

A stolen car sparked a dramatic police chase which saw one man arrested and others flee from the scene.

Locals in Wallasey were woken up by the sound of a police helicopter at around midnight on Thursday, as police swooped on the area near Central Park.

The chase involved the pursuit of a stolen car, after police received reports of a Toyota Rav4 car driving dangerously at around 11.40pm.

One eye witness described hearing a "loud bang" shortly after midnight, followed by lots of police sirens.

They said: "There were lots of police in the car park of the Cherry Tree Shopping Centre alongside Mill Lane.

"The police helicopter was circling overhead for about half an hour."

The force said the chase came to an end near Central Park with the assistance of the National Police Air Service.

One man was detained at the scene but a number of other men are believed to have fled on foot.

The man who was detained by officers was arrested for theft and burglary.

A spokesperson from the force said: "Officers were involved in a pursuit of a stolen vehicle at around 11:40pm last night (16 th July) following reports of a Toyota Rav4 car being seen driving dangerously.

"With the assistance of NPAS, officers followed the car which came to a stop near Central Park, Wallasey just after midnight this morning (17 th July).

"One man was detained at the scene, whilst a number of other men are believed to have ran off on foot. The detained male was arrested for theft and burglary.

"Investigations are ongoing to establish who else was in the car, which is believed to have been stolen from the Cheshire area.
