'Stolen' car in crash with police vehicle that ordered it to pull over

A suspected stolen car was involved in a crash with a police vehicle on a busy city road as officers tried to perform a stop, ordering it to pull over.

The incident happened on County Road in Walton at around 2.15pm today.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said officers were executing a "stop", when in the process, the car, believed to be a dark-coloured Ford Focus crashed.

The Focus reportedly collided with the patrol car which was described as minor by Merseyside Police. 

Nobody was injured.  The Focus was suspected to be stolen with switched registration plates.

One man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

Pictures taken from the scene showed the vehicle abandoned in the near side lane of County Road, close to the Harlech Castle pub.

Part of the street was cordoned off and County Road was closed for a short period of time before police reopened it.

The left front wheel of the Focus  appeared to have suffered some damage.

Arriva temporarily diverted their no.68 service via Walton Lane and Queens Drive to avoid the area.

The collision led to some congestion in the area.

Merseytravel warned motorists to avoid the vicinity.
