Stolen car found dumped and engulfed in flames on Scots street as police launch probe

A police investigation has been launched after a stolen car was found engulfed in flames on a Scots street late last night.

Shocking footage from the scene shows the blaze ripping through the vehicle on Old Glasgow Road in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.

Fire crews worked for almost an hour to tackle the inferno after receiving the alarm at 10.55pm.

Police Scotland has now launched an investigation into the fire, which they are treating as wilful.

Officers confirmed the car had been reported as stolen from the area before it was later found dumped and up in flames.

Inquiries remain ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to reports of a car on fire on Old Glasgow Road, Cumbernauld, at 10.55pm on Thursday, March 31.

"The car had previously been reported stolen from the local area.

"The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 10.37pm on Thursday, March 31 to attend a vehicle fire on Old Glasgow Road in Cumbernauld.

"One appliance was used and the car was found well alight.

"Fire crews left the scene at 11.25pm."
