Stolen car demolishes traffic light after police chase

A stolen car smashed into a traffic light in Liverpool city centre after a police chase.

The car, which had false plates, was being pursued by a Merseyside Police car when it crashed outside the new Royal Liverpool hospital, at the junction of Mount Vernon Road and Low Hill.

The driver tried to run away from the crash scene but was subsequently arrested.

The Merseyside Roads Policing Unit posted a picture of the scene on its social media account following the incident yesterday evening (Thursday).

It said: "Stolen vehicle on false plates pursued by officers. Driver of stolen vehicle crashed it and tried to make off on foot.

"Unfortunately for him his running wasn't much better than his driving. Arrested sus theft, disqualified drive, dangerous drive and fail to stop."
