Stolen car crashes into gravestones at cemetery and bursts into flames

A stolen car left the road at a Valleys cemetery, causing damage to dozens of graves before catching fire.

Photos of the damage caused by the car show that several headstones have been knocked lose, torn down or chipped at Cefn Cemetery in Merthyr Tydfil.

A spokesman for South Wales Police confirmed that the white Audi A3 had been reported stolen from a nearby address shortly before the incident

Dafydd Iles, who is director of Harp Funeral Services, visited the site in the early hours of Wednesday, February 26 following the incident which happened around 5.30pm on Tuesday.

He described how it looked like the car, which was burnt out, came off the road over several gravestones, damaging flowers and plants left by loved ones.

"The photos do not do it justice, it is terribly sad. It is quite a busy cemetery, and people in the Valleys are really proud and the graves are well looked after.

"Not only do they keep the grave of their loved ones cut and tidy but they do the neighbouring graves too. It is sad to see it like this," said 28-year-old Dafydd.

A spokeswoman for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council said the council is working with the police to establish the events that led to the car crashing and catching fire.

They added that around several memorials have been damaged, and aim to contact the grave owners as soon as possible.

Dafydd added that people spend hundreds and sometimes even thousands of pounds on a suitable headstone to remember their loved ones, adding that it was terrible to see them damaged in this way.

He also said the funeral service has received countless number of calls from people who are worried that their relatives' graves were damaged, with one caller from Germany expressing concern.

Harp Funeral Services have offered to repair and replace the gravestones which have been damaged and dislodged at the wishes of the families.

"If we can replace them then we will to get it back to normal as soon as possible."
