Stolen car crashes in chase as police and helicopter surround petrol station

A man has been arrested after a 'shocking' incident in Birkenhead in the early hours of this morning.

Police were called to Wirral Way Service Station, on Borough Road, at around 12.20am on Tuesday, October 5, to reports of a Mini being stolen from the forecourt.

The National Police Air Service assisted officers in tracking down the stolen car and it was found crashed on Park Road South.

Detectives then found a main at a nearby address and took him into custody.

The 35-year-old man, from Rock Ferry, has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking; dangerous driving; disqualified driving; and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Detective Inspector Barbara Hebden said: "This would have been a shocking incident to have experienced or witnessed and thankfully nobody was injured during the theft or the driving which followed.

"Although a man is in custody, we’re still keen to speak to anyone who saw the incident or captured anything on CCTV, dashcam or other devices as we continue to investigate."
