'Stolen car' abandoned outside houses after high speed chase

A Ford Fiesta spotted speeding by police resulted in a short chase, and was later abandoned on a residential street.

Merseyside Police said an officer spotted the car being driven at speed along Townsend Lane in Anfield around 9.15pm yesterday.

The car failed to stop for police and a short chase resulted in the vehicle being abandoned on Pinehurst Avenue a short time later.

Soon after, a 40-year-old man was arrested close by on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink driving, drug driving, failing to stop and aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

Police said the man currently remains in custody as investigations continue.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We arrested a 40 year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink driving, drug driving, fail to stop and aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

"An officer spotted a Ford Fiesta being driven at speed along Townsend Lane at around 9.15pm last night, Thursday, July 29.

"The car failed to stop when signalled to do so and a short pursuit took place.

"The man currently remains in custody."
