Stoke-on-Trent hotel which closed as a result of coronavirus is back open and under new ownership

A Stoke-on-Trent hotel which closed after 40 years in business is back open and under new ownership.

The Tollgate Hotel, in Blurton, suddenly closed last year after falling victim to the coronavirus pandemic.

But now the Ripon Road venue has reopened following a major refurbishment.

It has been taken on by a hotel group that runs two other venues in Staffordshire.

Manager Mr Ryan told StokeonTrentLive: "We knew the history of the place, it's been a family run business for over 40 years.

"We wanted to carry on what they've built. It's been a community hub for a long time, and we want to continue that.

"We've been able to take on some of the old staff who were made redundant. Our head housekeeper Liz has just been promoted to area housekeeping manager for the group across all of the hotels.

"Mike, who was the old manager here, is now back as the general manager. Breakfast chef Tracey was here for around 12 years, and she's back too.

"I wanted key, experienced members of staff to support us."

As part of the refurbishment, all 24 of the hotel's rooms have been given a makeover and the restaurant and bar areas have been transformed.

Visitors can now choose from the main bar and restaurant or the Winner's Lounge which boasts a big screen for sporting events.

The menu has also been upgraded to offer vegan and gluten-free options.

At the moment, the hotel's gym is closed but the Shapemasters Stoke studio and squash courts will be up and running again soon.

Mr Ryan added: "Things have worked well for us during the pandemic. Throughout the group, none of our staff have lost jobs, we haven't closed one hotel, all of our suppliers have stayed in business.

"We just want people to know that we're back, we're here for the community, and absolutely everyone is welcome."
