Stoke City join Bristol City in race for Newcastle United defender

Stoke City have been linked with a move for Newcastle United's Ciaran Clark.

Football Insider report that Nathan Jones is keen on bringing a new central defender to the Potteries after losing captain Ryan Shawcross to a broken leg.

The news comes just a day after Bristol City were credited with an interest in Clark.

City defender Adam Webster has been subject to a £20m bid from Brighton & Hove Albion, and the Robins are eyeing up Clark as a potential replacement.

Yet they face plenty of competition for the Irish centre-back, with Crystal Palace also said to be keen on him.

Clark has been priced at between £5m and £7m in the national press, yet Magpies boss Steve Bruce's comments appear to have muddied the water over his availaibility.

Bruce had a discussion with Clark prior to Newcastle's pre-season friendly with Hibernian, and revealed post-match that he did not expect the player to leave.

He said: "I have had a chat and that is not going to happen."

However, Clark featured just 14 times for the Magpies last season having fallen down the pecking order at the Premier League club.
