Stoke City confirm Cameron Carter-Vickers to return to Spurs following loan spell

Stoke City have confirmed that Tottenham are to recall Cameron Carter-Vickers from his loan spell at the bet365 Stadium on Thursday, January 2.

The United States international joined the Championship side on loan at the start of the season but he has failed to feature for the Potters in recent weeks.

Making 15 appearances for Stoke, with 14 of those starts, the 21-year-old has been left out of the squad over the past month following the appointment of Michael O'Neill as boss.

Given the lack of first-team football, the Lilywhites have decided to bring the defender back to the capital at the start of the year.

A statement on Stoke's official website read: "The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Cameron for his efforts and wish him every success for the future."

Making his first-team debut for Spurs in 2016 against Gillingham in the EFL Cup, Carter-Vickers has spent time on loan at Sheffield United, Ipswich Town and Swansea City in recent seasons to gain valuable experience of playing first-team football.

The announcement that he will return to Spurs comes 24 hours after Leeds confirmed that Jack Clarke would also go back to his parent club after a disappointing loan spell at Elland Road.

Bursting onto the scene last season as the West Yorkshire club pushed for promotion, the winger only made three appearances on loan for the Championship side after Spurs decided to send him back to Leeds on a temporary deal after signing him permanently at the start of July.

Speaking after the draw against Preston North End on Boxing Day, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa hailed the 19-year-old despite the fact he couldn't make an impact in the first team this time around.

"I am very grateful with Clarke. He made his contribution in this part of the season, even if I didn’t use him," said the Argentine, as reported by Leeds Live.

"In the last days, he improved his performance, but just when this process was going on Tottenham decided to ask Leeds for Clarke to come back.

"I thought it was unnecessary to keep him if I knew he wasn’t going to be with us.

"I always try to make the players arrive as the best version of themselves. Sometimes, this process is not fast, it’s slow and we don’t achieve it faster.

"For instance, I saw Nketiah tonight at a good level, light and fresh to run in a tough match and comfortable.

"He unbalanced a lot of situations. He was fast. Comfortable in small-sized spaces and able to unbalance the match."
