Stockport streets turn to rivers - and there could be more flooding... the borough is on 'high alert'

Stockport has been hit by yet more flooding.

Several streets in Woodley, Bredbury and Romiley were underwater on Thursday afternoon, with transport also affected.

Water drained away quickly in most places.

Northern was forced to cancel trains between Manchester Piccadilly and New Mills due to flooding on the tracks.

Lines have since reopened, but delays are expected until the end of service.

Videos posted on social media show what appears to be a river of water gushing down Werneth Road in Woodley, as well as Smithy Green.

A man was also spotted wading through the water in a canoe.

Stockport council said it remains on 'high alert' for further flooding after a severe 'danger to life' warning was issued for the River Goyt in Whaley Bridge, which also runs through areas of the borough.

The A555 remains closed 'until further notice' after drivers became stranded when it flooded on Wednesday for the second time in a week.

Crossley Road, Bridge Lane and Bramhall Lane South are also understood to be shut.

Yesterday, at least 11 people - and four dogs - had to be rescued by boat after Bramhall roundabout flooded.

Lyme Park, just south of Stockport, has also suffered substantial damage.

The mansion and estate near Stockport was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon.

Several visitors had to be rescued by rangers after becoming separated from their vehicles by the rising floodwaters.

Staff worked through the night to save the home's many priceless antiques and unique interiors, including the 15th Century Sarum Missal, said to be the most important book in the National Trust collection, after floodwaters swept through parts of the main house and the buildings around the Timber Yard.

National Trust staff and conservation specialists are currently trying to asses the extent of the damage to buildings, paths and roads.
