Stockport's Where The Light Gets In recognised in Michelin star announcements with new 'green' star

Acclaimed Stockport restaurant Where The Light Gets In has been given a 'green' Michelin star - the only nod for the region in this year's awards.

The new type of star has been created to recognise the restaurants who are leading the way in sustainability.

Sam Buckley's much-loved restaurant was one of just 23 businesses in the UK and Ireland to be given the accolade.

The new classification celebrates sustainable gastronomy practices and was announced in a live-streamed ceremony this evening.

Other north west restaurants to receive a green star included L'Enclume in the Lake District, and Hypha in Chester.

Where The Light Gets In serves a daily-changing menu that is created around the ingredients on hand each day.

From fruit, vegetables and herbs grown on its own farm to sustainably-sourced seafood, diners sit down to a £65 menu with no idea what they'll be eating until they arrive.

The restaurant, which seats just 30 diners in an old coffee warehouse, has received rave reviews from both local and national restaurant reviewers.

Michelin stars have been awarded across the UK and Ireland this evening in a virtual event hosted by Davina McCall.

There were no other stars for Greater Manchester, despite many tipping Mana to receive its second.

The Ancoats restaurant broke a 40-year drought for Manchester, which had been snubbed for a Michelin star since 1977.

Eyes had also been on Where The Lights Gets In for its first Michelin star, as well as Adam Reid at The French and Enxaneta at Tast.

The announcements were pushed back by several months to account for the lockdowns and hospitality closures of the last year.

Big winners included Clare Smyth at Core and Helene Darroze at The Connaught, who both scooped a third Michelin star.

A Wong, Restaurant Story and Da Terra all nabbed their second stars this evening too.
