Stockport’s Covid-19 vaccine programme has hit a major milestone on Monday — jabbing its 200,000th resident.
It means that 80 percent of the borough's adults registered with a Stockport GP have received their first Covid-19 vaccination.
Almost 150,000 have also received their second dose, meaning almost three in five in the borough are fully-protected.
That represents remarkable progress for local health leaders, having only started vaccinating the area’s most vulnerable in January.
“The vaccination programme has been a huge team effort and we are very proud that we have vaccinated so many people in such a short period of time,” Dr Cath Briggs, chair of NHS Stockport clinical commissioning group, the body which runs the programme, said.
Dr Briggs added that it was vital that every resident got both doses of the vaccine.
She said: “There is still much more work to do to make sure as many people as possible are invited for their vaccination.”
“It’s just as important to get your second dose when it’s time as it’s only with both doses that you get your maximum protection against COVID-19, so book an appointment or head to a pop up when you get your invitation.”
The news comes the week after Stockport’s youngest adults started getting their inoculations, after government rules allowed all over-18s to book a jab last Thursday (June 17).
Stockport leaders were quick to praise the work of the NHS locally.
“Congratulations to NHS Stockport CCG for reaching the important milestone of 200,000 patients vaccinated against Covid in the borough,” Councillor Jude Wells, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Health, Stockport Council, said.
“Each and every one of the people who has had their vaccination has played their part in helping to make Stockport a safer, healthier place for its residents, so thank you very much.”
As of June 16, Stockport’s Covid-19 case rate is 200.7 infections per 100,000 residents.
That is a week-on-week decrease of 13 percent.
