Stockport pub changes name to The Southgate ahead of Euro 2020 final

A Stockport town centre pub has been given a football-themed makeover ahead of Sunday's Euro 2020 final.

The Chestergate, in Mersey Square, has changed its name to The Southgate as a show of support to the England boss and his players ahead of the Three Lions match against Italy.

The pub's old sign has been replaced by a new one featuring an image of Gareth Southgate and a St. George's flag.

Pub manager Lisa Mills said: "Seeing everyone celebrate together has been amazing. England's success has been just the boost everyone's needed.

"The atmosphere on match days is unbelievable. Sunday will be a day to remember."

Chris Tulloch, managing director of Blind Tiger Inns which owns the pub, added: "In amongst all the hard work that goes into running the pubs, we like to have a bit of fun here at Blind Tiger.

"Our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a fun but safe environment for our customers to enjoy the Euros.

"Gareth Southgate's success with his team has brought the nation together, so it's only right that we provide The Southgate pub for people to come together and watch the England team finally bring it home! (I hope.)"

The pub will be showing tomorrow evening's game, but is already fully booked.

The name change is just the latest example of Euros fever taking hold in Stockport.

Yesterday, a number of street signs around the town were changed to honour the England team.

Aldersgate Road, in Heaviley, was transformed into Southgate Road as a nod to the England manager, while Edgeley Fold was doctored in honour of Stockport's own Phil Foden.

Aston Close leading to Pickmere Close, in Adswood, was transformed into Jordan Pickford Close.

And Rae Street in Edgeley has become Rashford Street.

Meanwhile Mount Road, also in Edgeley, has been changed to Mason Mount Road.

Southgate and his players will have the opportunity to make themselves national heroes when they step out in front of 60,000 supporters at Wembley tomorrow evening.

Victory would mark the men’s football team’s first major tournament win since the 1966 World Cup.

The Euro 2020 final is due to kick off at 8pm on Sunday (July 11).
